Occidental, Ousmane Sow l'est assurément. Elevé à l'Ecole française de Dakar, et ayant vécu près de vingt ans à Paris, des commissariats de la Gare de Lyon - quand il ne savait où dormir - à son cabinet de kinésithérapeute de Montreuil-sous-Bois, puis à Paris dans le 20e arrondissement - quand il consultait le jour et sculptait la nuit - ce chirurgien du corps, de tous les corps, n'ignore rien de la culture tempérée.
Mais africain, Ousmane l'est viscéralement. Et plus encore de cette terre du Sénégal, cette Grèce de l'Afrique, il a dans ses gènes le souvenir des chevauchées et des razzias dans la savane brûlante qu'opéraient sa grand-mère et son arrière grand-père avec les "cedo", ces cavaliers du diable des armées royales. Au-delà de ce bruit et de cette fureur enfouis, il y a en lui cette parole inspirée du griot, ce souffle épique de la narration homérique, ce goût du mythe vivant, qu'on peut et qu'on veut toucher du doigt et des yeux. On ne devient pas impunément un "menton velu" prodige, dans un continent où l'art souverain reste la sculpture. Une sculpture à taille humaine, qu'on peut promener avec soi, sans esquisse, sans étude et sans dessin préparatoire, soumise à la seule dextérité de l'artiste, qui a pour charge de faire signifier la matière. Un art inspiré qui se passe de modèles.
Ousmane Sow is certainly western. A pupil of the French School in Dakar, and having lived nearly twenty years in Paris, and in the railway police stations of Lyon - when he had no-where else to sleep - in his physiotherapy practice in Montreuil-sous-Bois, then in Paris in the 20th District - when he practiced during the day and sculpted at night - this surgeon of the body, of all bodies, knew all there was to know of the culture of these temperate zones.
But as an African Ousmane is African deep down. And more than this, from Senegal, the Greece of Africa, he has in his genes the memory of the cavalcades and forays into the burning savanna which his grandmother and great grandfather with the 'cedos' were part of, these devil's horsemen of the royal armies. Beyond this latent noise and fury, he has a language inspired by the griot, this epic inspiration of Homeric narrative, a taste for living myth, which is tangible and which one seeks to touch with one's fingers and eyes. Becoming a wise old man is not something that comes without a price in a continent where the dominant art form remains sculpture. This is sculpture on a human scale, which you can take with you, without an outline sketch, without a preliminary design or preparatory drawing, which is a product of the artist's dexterity alone, whose responsibility is to give meaning to matter. An inspired art which transcends models.
