DIETER APPELT
Ramifications

Dieter Appelt's oeuvre is among the most enigmatic of the second half of the 20th century. For the last forty years the German opera singer, filmmaker, sculptor, draughtsman and photographer has been producing images situated between life and death, between grief and belief. "Ramifications" points up the intertwining of objects engendered by time as Appelt's convergence of cinema and photography cuts through chronology, slices up the moment and reveals things at once separated from themselves, abandoned, reclaimed and multiplied. His work concentrates time into a series of thrusts, making its chosen moments revolve, flow, disappear and resurface and creating an offbeat space-time never to be taken (or offered) in the same way twice.
Here Dieter Appelt offers a new set of installations combining photographic tableaux, films and sculptures. The accompanying monograph is published by Actes Sud.
