Histoire d'une fête. Story of an event.

L’histoire du 8 décembre est intiment liée à l’histoire religieuse lyonnaise.
The story of december 8 is closely related to the religious history of Lyon.

En 1850, les autorités religieuses lancent un concours pour la réalisation d’une statue, envisagée comme un signal religieux au sommet de la colline de Fourvière. Un an plus tard, ce concours est remporté par le sculpteur lyonnais Fabisch, et la date du 8 septembre 1852 est choisie pour son inauguration. Mais au mois d’août, la Saône sort de son lit et envahit le chantier où la statue doit être réalisée.
In 1850, the religious authorities lauch a competition for the making of a statue, considered as a religious signal at the top of the Fourvière hill. One year later, the competition winner is the sculptor from Lyon, Fabisch, and its unveiling is fixed for december 8, 1852. But during August, the Saône overflow its banks and invade the working site where the statue should have been carried out.

L’inauguration est donc reportée au 8 décembre, fête de l’immaculée conception. Le jour même, les journaux annoncent le programme de la soirée et toute la ville se prépare pour l’événement. Quelques uns prévoient même d’illuminer les façades de leurs habitations à l’aide de bougies. Mais le mauvais temps va à nouveau contrarier les réjouissances, contraignant les autorités religieuses à remettre l’inauguration au 12 décembre. Malgré ce contrordre, l’enthousiasme des Lyonnais ne fut pas éteint.
The unveiling is then postponed to december 8, feast of the immaculate conception. On this day, newspapers give notice of the evening program and
all the city is making ready for the event. But bad weather is going to thwart teh rejoicings, constrainig the authorities to postpone the unveiling on december 12. In spite of this counter-order, the enthousiasm of the inhabitants of Lyon did faded not

Dès 18h, les premières fenêtres s’allument, et à 20h, la ville entière est illuminée. Une grande partie de la population descend dans la rue, joyeuse et attendrie, s’étonnant de ce geste spontané et communicatif. Les autorités religieuses suivent le mouvement et la chapelle de Fourvière apparaît alors dans la nuit.
From 6 p.m., the first windows are lit up and at 8 p.m. the whole city is illuminated. A great part of the population walk down in the streets, happy and astonished by this spontaneous gesture. The religious authorities follow suit and the Fourvier chapel appears in the night.

Ce soir là, une véritable fête est née ! Chaque année désormais, le 8 décembre, les Lyonnais déposent des lumignons à leurs fenêtres et se retrouvent pour déambuler dans les rues de la ville.
On this evening, a true feast is born. From now, on every december 8, the inhabitants of Lyon put snuffs at their windows and gather to walk in the city streets.
