The Boxes
- Instruction for a foreign city -
Daniel Aschwanden and Peter Stamer, two Austrian visual artists and choreographers, will set camp in Lyon, in the district of La Guillotière. As “art craftsmen”, they will ask people of various linguistic origins to tell us about their life, to share words and stories. Thirty boxes will be given to locals and each of them will decorate the inside or his/her box, his/her universe, with photos, drawings, or legends. Each of them will then create with the help of the artists a story - their own or an invented story - which he/she will tell to people invited to enter the box… This experience was tried out last year in Beijing where they chose people from very different social backgrounds, and will be recreated in Lyon to illustrate a city populated by a number of inhabitants of many various geographic and linguistic origins.
The box is used to create a meeting and link people who have never met before in the city. What is this box doing out in the street, and what happens in it? The “portable piece of architecture” creates a double show, both public and private.
Outside, passers-by gather. Inside, everyday life stops and gives way to an intimate moment: the host reveals his true self to his guest. A stroll & installation at La Guillotière and at Les Subsistances

Les Boîtes
- Instructions pour une ville étrangère -
Daniel Aschwanden et Peter Stamer, plasticiens et chorégraphes autrichiens, s’installent à Lyon, à la Guillotière. En “travailleurs de l’art”, ils invitent les habitants d’origines linguistiques diverses à raconter leur vie, partager des mots, des histoires. 40 boîtes seront offertes aux habitants et chacun construira à partir de photos, dessins, légendes son intérieur de boîte, son univers. Chacun créera ensuite, avec leur aide un récit, sa propre histoire ou une histoire inventée qu’il racontera, face à des invités, dans la boîte… Cette expérience, ils l’ont menée l’an dernier à Pékin en choisissant des personnes de milieux sociaux extrêmement différents, ils la reconduisent à Lyon pour témoigner d’une ville peuplée d’habitants d’origines géographiques et linguistiques très diverses.

"LA BOÎTE
C’est le médium utilisé pour provoquer une rencontre et mettre en lien des gens qui ne se sont jamais vus auparavant dans la ville. Que fait cette boîte dans la rue, mais surtout que s’y passe-t-il ? Cette “pièce d’architecture portative” crée un double spectacle, public et intime. A l’extérieur, un attroupement de passants. A l’intérieur, le quotidien s’arrête et laisse place à un moment d’intimité : l’hôte se raconte à son invité. Déambulation & installation à la Guillotière et aux Subsistances"
