The elk.
A wounded elk sank exhausted to the bottom of a lake at Taderup on Falster 8700 years ago. In 1922 the skeleton was found in a peat bog. Among the bones was a broken bone point that may have been used in the hunt. Later a harpoon was found in the same peat bog. Several kinds of tools and weapons were made from the large animal's antlers and slender bones. The hunting was so intensive that the species was wipes out in Zealand c. 8500 years ago. But the elk still played an imporant role in the hunters' mythology. Tooth beads and tools of elk antler and bone were valuable barter objects |

The Gundestrup Cauldron
One of the national museum most precious treasures is the silvet cauldron from Gunderstrup in Himmerland, weighing nine kilos. It was made in around 100 BC in the southern Balkans before being brought to Denmark and later sacrificed in a bog, perhaps to higher powers. The ornamentation features swarms of figures depicting gods, goddesses, animals and mythical creatures from a religion unknown to us |

Remarkable stuff. It's fascinating and infuriating trying to imagine those lives all those years ago.
