Sacra di San Michele
The Grand Stairway of the Dead
The Tower of the Beautiful Alda
The Flying Butresses
The remains of an ancient temple are known as The sepulchre of the monks as they are considered as the ruins of an old mortuary chapel. However, it is now regarded as a much more reasonable assumption the explanation according to which that octagonal chapel should be the reproduction of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Therefore it evokes the death and the resurrection of Christ, but it also represents much more a strong evocation of the Celestial Jerusalem rather than only a reference to the terrestrial Jerusalem. The monastery itself becomes, in this way, a kind of symbol of a new civilisation or of a new Promised Land.
