THE TREE, 1966
Painted steel, 520 x 1070 cm
In contrast to the largely abstract dimension of Otto’s mobile, the monumental sculpture The tree – a combination of ‘mobile’ and ‘stabile’ (stationary sculpture) conceived for an exterior setting – offers a design in which Calder seems to start from the figural motif of the tree and from there explore its transition towards a radically abstracted image. This same process can be observed in particular in the work of Mondrian. Calder’s sculpture, which dominates the gardens of the Fondation Beyeler, has become something of an emblem of the collection and its two founders.

josy63 C'est une magnifique sculpture s'intégrant au paysage sans forcer et rendant un belle hommage aux arbres dont elle s'inspire. J'imagine les douces tintinnabulations des "feuilles" lorsqu'une brise légère se lève
