The pose reminds me of Caravaggio's Amor Vincit Omnia (1602), in Berlin now... that was also a piece of art that have raised some eyebrows... Just to contemplate that back in 537 (!!!) this magnificent statue was used as a weapon and thrown down from the walls of Hadrian's Mausoleum, to me is just mind boggling, again! What you write about the provenance is also very interesting. Pacetti bought it but was barred from selling it abroad, and the Barberini sued it back just to sell it abroad themselves? Hm, where is justice? And finally: the question of copies. It is so confusing to me, I never know where the original is, e.g. The Laocoon: In Vatican, or Firenze, or Versailles or who knows where else? Do you know?

this would be erotic if his dick was hard. well, it actually IS hard (stone hard indeed) but not erect. and i wonder if that is making a statement; what did the original artist wanted to express here? i doubt it was anything sexual... the whole posture is more that of a drunk with a headache who couldn't care less about how he looks to the prude bystander.
