#188 Bulls

2009.07.07

[Little bull]

Today July 7th is a great day in Spain.
Today is San Fermín and Pamplona celebrates the feast of bulls most important and famous in my country.

It's painful for me to use in this context words such as "feast", "important" or "great". And I don't give a damn if you've read Hemingway.

If you really love animals, if you really care for Nature... plase, take some minutes to read what is really a bullfight.

Notice that I post a picture of a baby and not pictures of a bullfight. Torture doesn't require that we recreated in its images.

* 24 hours before entering the bullring, the bull had been kept in the dark. When he goes into the bullring, the light and the screams of the spectators terrify him. The bull tries to scape, not to attack.

* The horns have been cut to protect the "brave" bullfighter. Sand bags were hung from his neck for hours. His testicles and kidneys have been beaten.

* Banderillas (barbed dart stuck into the bull's neck) make the bleeding constant. The hook moves into the wound with each movement of the bull and the touch of red cape. This is precisely the function of banderillas.

* Some banderillas have a 8 cms harpoon. The results in the bull: fatal internal bleeding. They stick into the bull all the necessary banderillas to weaken him.

* The eyes of the bull have been spread with greasy to hinder his vision. His legs have been smeared with a substance that produces burning and prevents him from kept quiet.

* If the bull is still fierce, the picador sticks a lance into the back of a bull that destroys his muscles and injures blood vessels and nerves.

* The horses of the picadors suffering multiple fractures of ribs and evisceration. They put a "protective covering" to pretend that they are protecting the horse, but in reality it's to avoid the public see the wounds in the horse.

* Blood loss and injuries into the spine prevent the bull raises his head, he's weak and almost blind. Now is when the cowardly bullfighter can get closer to him.

* The bull is crossed with a sword of 80 cms in length, which can destroy the liver, lungs and other organs.
If the bull is lucky, the sword will go through his heart. If he has no luck, he will begin to drown in his own blood. In this case it will be necessary the descabello.

* The descabello: the bull is stabbed in the neck with a long sword, ending in 10 cms blade. The bull is very strong and he usually doesn't die with this. He falls to the ground, moribund but still suffering.

* The bull is finished off with a dagger of 10 cms. They try to sectione the spinal cord between vertebrae 'atlas' and' axis'. The muscles of the bull are paralyzed and he cannot breathe, he dies from asphyxiation, often drowned in his own blood, which comes bubbling through the mouth and nose.

* The bull is dragged across the bullring for everybody to see. People shout and clap to the bullfighter while the bull, who is still conscious, suffer and leave a huge trail of blood throughout the tour.

Do you think I can be proud of be Spanish?
The whole world knows Spain because of bullfighting...
This torture is our symbol.
We are the tormentors.
THE ONES WHO THINK BULLFIGHT IS ART... MUST BE CRAZY.

I wish the world knows my beautiful country for other reasons...

Long live the bulls!
But no the bullfights!

gonia I know Spain because you live there and you make so beautifull pictures of butterflies and your country can be proud of you!

girafferacing What a beautiful creature - why would anyone wish to carry out such atrocities on such an animal in the name of sport. I hope this little chap never has to face such horrors.

NO TO BULLFIGHTING and Im a Spanish proud to be against this;)

Jarvo I am with you 100% Ruth, I hate to see cruelty to animals. People in my country justify seeing this when on holiday because it is "your culture". I think that is completely wrong. "Culture" counts for nothing if it condones and promotes pain and suffering. You are right to be proud of what you do.
Jarvo · 2009-07-07: 15:50
astrobrojler If there wouldn't be the audience, there wouldn't be bullfights as well. It's hard to change already shaped people so we have to wait until a few generations pass – maybe young won't be interested in such "entertainment" anymore. I hope so :)
astrobrojler · 2009-07-07: 16:01
tomie i saw a bullfight in south of France...and i can say what you write is TRUE!!!
i was sick to see how the bulls was suffering...i never will go and see another bullfight!
tomie · 2009-07-07: 16:16
Najeli I can't read it, it's too terrifying :( I don't understand what a pleasure is to watch these fights??
Cute shot!
Najeli · 2009-07-07: 16:18
bedazzled It was a heartbreaking tale--I wonder what kind of satisfaction comes by hurting the poor fellows. But then that's human nature I guess. You have definitely so many other things to be proud of--I love your language, your music, your films!! Well, this is a very cute little bull you have shown here--
bedazzled · 2009-07-07: 17:05
lookagain Your shot of the little bull is so cute....what an adorable little animal. The story of what may happen to him is very very sad....just horrible. Unfortunately, it's apparently difficult to break with tradition and do away with this cruel sport.
lookagain · 2009-07-07: 18:52
tedbarlow GOOD, I am VERY pleased to hear this from you Ruth;
Firsty because although many are against this practice, it is especially good to hear it from a citizen of Spain and Madrid!!
Secondly, because now I know we are truely friends, not just in our shared interest in nature and art/photography but for more fundamental ideas and philosophies of life!!
Thirdly, although many seem to think that these things will just disappear with time or are too difficult to change, your public condemnation and information about this help to make these changes possible...without your words and the words and actions of others, these things will NEVER change!!
Forthly, I believe that you truely understood my intention with the cow blogs...to show the curiosity, vunerability and personality of a creature that has been greatly overlooked simply to satisfy human need or taste...we know better ;-) To humble ourselves at the feet of such a creature and show a human(e) touch with humour is the work of artists and human love.
And finally, a message to Teresa;
The things I say to Ruth here also apply to you...I am extremely happy to call you both friends and thank you for publically stating your position on these matters...brava both!!
tedbarlow · 2009-07-07: 20:03
tedbarlow And to Jon also...Bravo!!
tedbarlow · 2009-07-07: 20:04

Unchained T o t al m e n t e apoiada, Ruth!!!
Unchained · 2009-07-08: 03:25

JaCkYe · 2009-07-08: 07:53
Lynda I would never go to a bullfight and thought them cruel but did not know the extent of the cruelty until I read your description here. I hope tourists stop going and that there are animal protection organisations in Spain who are fighting to end this cruel tradition..
Lynda · 2009-07-08: 08:38
TIM927 jaja sois geniales, un besote!!!
TIM927 · 2009-07-08: 12:45
firehorsecri Ruth, I write in English to be understood by a larger no. of people: I share your point of view and condemnation. I lived in Spain and never saw a corrida as I knew all that you wrote here. I even argued with some Spanish about it, in Sevilla. For me too that's not art or a sport, but a torture! Unfortunately in Spain there are still too many traditional tortures on animals and I do hope that the Spanish government will declare legally outlaws those cruel traditions asap.
Your photo is lovely and the little bull is so cute :-)
firehorsecri · 2009-07-08: 16:37
Nellinka So cute and innocent. I couldn't watch a bullfight, not to mention that you even have to pay for it.

Felicidades Ruth... y GRACIAS.
