#211 Stop killing Earth

2009.07.30

Keukenhof, Lisse - Holland

Asphodelus ramosus L. - Wild spikenards
La Herrería Forest, El Escorial - Madrid

Fringilla coelebs - Chaffinch (male)

Bombus jonellus - Bumble bee
La Herreria Forest, El Escorial - Madrid

What do we eat? Meat, meat, meat... Meat under stress. That steak is a cow locked in a cattle ranch exploitation, forced to eat feed without rest.
This has an impact on the environment.

Where and how do we live? Air-conditioning - Why to be at 24º when you can stay at 18º? Heating - Why to be at 24º wearing a sweater when you can stay at 30º dressing a T-shirt? Why to chose renewable energy? That's expensive. It's easier to continue to consume resources such as coal or gas.
Our energy footprint adds to the impact.

How do we move? Why to use a bicycle or go walking? Ufff... Slopes, distances... Why to use public transports? It's more comfortable to use our own private car with air-conditioning and heating!
Our transport habits add to the impact.

How we consume? Oh, my jeans went out of fashion! There's a new Ipod model. I need more terabytes for my computer. I want a bigger car, a bigger house, a bigger life! Why?? Are the jeans broken? Your Ipod doesn't work? Are you sure you need more terabytes? Don't you fit in your car? And in your house?
Add up to the impact.

I don't want to show my future children pictures of butterflies because they have become extinct within a few years. I don't want to take the kids to the zoo and botanical garden because looking through the window we just can see cement and desert.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand, the author of HOME, says that these are the principal emissions of greenhouse gases.

If you still have not seen HOME, sit comfortably in your sofa this weekend and enjoy this wonderful film, distributed throughout the world for free. This is because the intention of Yann Arthus-Bertrand is that the message reaches all corners of the world.

Where and how do we live? I dont use air condintionair! I use a ventilator! is more economic i guess!

How do we move? My mum always says ''GO BY FOOT, THATS WHY GOD GAVE YOU'' lol :P
rarely we use our cars :) only if it for the work, or to a long distance! besides, public transports or by feet ;)

How we consume? I dont care at all about brands if you would like to know:) I guess i've no Branded clothes. i mean those famous ones! I do prefer no branded and nice, than branded and stupid.

smbunation I've said it before and I'll say it again. There are a lot of people who do care about the earth - unfortunately, that number is very much out-weighed by those who either don't care at all, or are too lazy to do anything. There are such simple and small things one can do that I see my neighbors will not even attempt - and that is just around the house. I'm afraid as a global effort, it is going to unfortunately take something catastrophic for everyone to wake up.

I have the film loading on YT right now. I will watch it either tonight or tomorrow some time. Thanks for letting everyone know exactly how you feel. Hopefully tonight someone will shut off a light or at least unplug their cell phone charger...

lookagain Wonderful collection of shots, Ruth....the beauty of nature. It's a disgrace the way animals are treated....to feed humans. My daughter recently saw the movie, Food, Inc. and she was appalled. I don't think many people really know the atrocities that are committed against the animals that are raised and slaughtered for food.

Chete Estoy de acuerdo en todo menos en lo de la comida, no puedo vivir sin carne !!! Lo siento, soy un carnivoro impenitente, pero si paso un día sin comer carne me mareo !!
Me encanta la última, con Maya alejándose de la flor
Chete · 2009-07-30: 14:29
Jarvo Neat set. The bug and the bee are my favourites. Agree with the message, though I don't always keep to it :-(
Jarvo · 2009-07-30: 18:56
blackhawk1552 Very nice set Ruth...The details and sharpness are superb i may say! you even capture the bees in flight..Wow! love all of it! Now for the earth thing...? well I was one of the movers of artificial coral reef in my town back home ( Philippines Island) However the good purpose we did was a big mistake...we just found out later after how many years when our divers investigate and get some samples of the old tires..there is a toxic substance on a decaying rubber...we ceased the project and stop what we have started...Instead we started educating people to start a sea weed farming which until now being done...
blackhawk1552 · 2009-07-30: 19:26

firehorsecri Beautiful shots Ruth...
In the end I love the hairy bombo flying away with its funny ass to the humans!
I always try to have the minimun impact on earth, to recycle... I eat rarely meat (I can't digest it and my mind gets very lazy after eating it, above all in the evening). I must say that I love fish only.
I share Smbunation's opinion... We are losing our wonderful Blue Planet forever...
firehorsecri · 2009-07-31: 08:10
firehorsecri P.S. At the referendum in Italy in 1987 I voted against nuclear power. We won that referendum! In more than 20 years my country did absolutely NOTHING in ecologic, green power, sun panels, etc. Now Berlusconi has gone against our will and our legal victory expressed by us Italian citizens. Is that democracy? NO. Just one example. I feel very angry and disgusted! And it's not Iran, you know.
firehorsecri · 2009-07-31: 08:14
NAYADES Very beautiful!!
NAYADES · 2009-07-31: 16:30
cariad thank you both for the beautiful captures and the link - very though provoking. The challenge is to awaken those who take this world for granted and find the key that motivates them to make a change :)
cariad · 2009-08-02: 02:38
Ryana Great pictures, as always and words to start people thinking!!!
