I stayed for two days in Beidaihe, 3 hours by car from Beijing, for this year's May holiday. On my walk tour in the evening, I saw these people setting off this lantern. But before that, they wrote their wishes on the red lantern: happiness, wealth, luck, etc...

When it's ready to take off, they release it up in the sky and god knows where it is going and whoever read their wishes.
