Shanhaiguan Town: Where the Great Wall Begins
2008.05.05
When I arrived in Beijing in 2002, I told myself that seeing the enduring Great Wall, which I've only seen in the pages of the books then, is a MUST.
I did.
Not just one part of the Great Wall but I've been to Sematai, Jinshanling, Badaling and Mutianyu parts of this amazing architecture. I did the marvelous 4-hour hike four times from Jinshanling to Sematai parts where you could see the endless tail of the dragon!
But I wonder, "Where does it begin and end?"
On May 2, this year, I found part of the answer of my question at Shanhaiguan town---where the Great Wall begins (above picture). Chinese call it as Lao Long Tou or Old Dragon's Head. I've never known that it begins at sea---and it's the only part overlooking the sea.
Though it's 99% renovated but there's a wee area where the old bricks were covered and preserved in glass walls.
And here are the some of the helpful rules and reminders that every tourists must follow while roaming around the vicinity.
