Good Morning, Vietnam!
2008.09.22
The title is a cliche , of course!
That’s a cliché, of course.
Good Morning, Vietnam is a 1987 comedy-drama film set in Saigon during the Vietnam War, based on the career of Adrian Cronauer (Robin Williams), a disc jockey on Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS), who proves hugely popular with the troops serving in South Vietnam, but infuriates his superiors with what they call his "irreverent tendency." The film was written by Mitch Markowitz and directed by Barry Levinson.

The bus travel from Phnom Penh, Cambodia to Ho Chi Minh City / Saigon was 7 hours. Though, the road was concrete and narrow (two lanes), the first hour and a half was slow since the rural (outside Phnom Penh) traffic was terrible. Imagine vans full loaded with people on top of it, carts pulled by horses, animals, tricycles, motorbikes, pedicabs, and bicycles---all crossing in one street.
I partied all night and only 3 hours of sleep when my hostel receptionist woke me up. And again, I slept 4 hours or so in the bus.
The bus arrived at 2:30 p.m. and I was very exhausted, as usual---it comes with the age, I guess, BUT, my body refused to get into bed.
So, after finding and checking in to my hotel, I checked some few emails and off I went to the streets in Saigon.
Forget about you image of Vietnam as a war-torn country.
Forget about the postcard perfect of a woman clad in a Vietcong dress with a pyramid-like hat made of bamboo---walking on the rice field.
Forget about a Communist image in your mind.
All of those are so outdated already. Vietnam HAS a new face and if you are a sojourner here, Saigon will never fails to amaze you everyday.

Motorbikes here are everywhere. They literally fly anywhere and everywhere. They are like ants that cross here and there. Pedestrian roads are even occupied by those in a hurry.
They do obey traffic rules but they’re always in a hurry. But some just can't wait for the last two or three flash of traffic light numbers. I was even confused with the traffic lights. It’s fast and everybody just goes.

It’s fun and amazing how these people just ride a motorbike like a king in a speed like nobody is in front, side and back of them.

Motorbikes, of course, are the easiest way to move around the city .
With all these confusions and traffic breeze, I’ve never seen a traffic accident yet. Vietnamese seem to be the title holder of being the Motorbike Country.

I tried it. And I have to hold tight. The driver would just break suddenly and go from time to time. I didn’t complain though. I had sooooooo much FUN!

I went to the Saigon River when I saw the golden sun in the sky. I asked anyone if there’s a river around and a motorbike driver told me that he can bring me there for a dollar. I’m not even sure if the river is on the East or West of the city. I just wanted to be there hoping the golden sun’s rays would at least show up a little in the river.
And I was not disappointed.

Water Puppet Show is uniquely Vietnamese. It’s like any other puppetry show on earth, except that it’s on the water. So, that’s where it got its name.
