Down & Dirty Gardening Journal (pg 4)

2008.04.18
We felt aftershocks of a 5.2 earthquake that occurred in West Salem, Illinois this morning at 4:37. We felt some quaking again at around 10:15. And we have had sporadic rain showers.

I went for a walk between the showers to see if any flowers were in bloom today.

Can't remember what this is. It is a very, very tiny flower that blooms close to where the fairies dance.

I found some miniature daffodils blooming near the little water garden.

The hyacinth smells good, but it looks deformed. The flowers should be closer together on the stem.

Another blue thing.

The hellebore (Lenten Rose) may be open soon.

Frilly looking tree peony leaf bud.

Rose bushes are starting to get their leaves and I tried to get artsy while playing with the camera.

And yet another blue thing. I have lots of "blue things" in a blue section of the flower garden. In case you haven't guessed, blue is my favorite color.

I saw a couple of lonely looking wild tulips open for a while today. They close when it is cloudy. I think the squirrels move them around the yard so you never know where a tulip will pop up. I didn't have much time to get any pics. It started raining again.

Princess Edane... heard a voice singing on a May Eve like this, and followed half awake and half asleep, until she came into the Land of Faery, where nobody gets old and godly and grave, where nobody gets old and crafty and wise, where nobody gets old and bitter of tongue. ~William Butler Yeats, "The Land of Heart's Desire," 1894

DancingDolphin Great set! It's amazing how much "ahead" one area of the country can be over another! Thanks for sharing.

What is it with hyacinths? I've never seen one in a yard that looked anything like what they're supposed to!

sunshineand 12 to faves
and i like the idea of the squirrel gardeners
i can see them in their little hats and holding their little shovels...
saying in little sweeky voices..."now where shall we plant the bulbs this year, honey?"

jenjung was that the earthquake they were talking about on the news? i really don't like earthquakes - there is something especially scary about the earth moving below your feet and never having any kind of warning. although they say animals can tell...did you notice any funny animal behavior before it happened?
