Walking in the Garden

2008.04.26
Fritillaria- normally these hang down like bells...it was just too windy today to hang around.

Fritillaria derives from fritillus, which is translated--depending on whom you consult--as either “dicebox” or “chessboard.” It most likely refers to the checkered member of the family, as do most of the plant’s other nicknames: snake’s head, variegated lily, checkered daffodil, turkey hen flower, pheasant lily, leopard lily, sullen lady, Lazarus bell and leper lily. The last designation refers to the bloom’s shape, which is thought to resemble the warning bell lepers were required to ring. Perhaps that association is why guinea hen flower stands for “persecution.” ...Missouri Botanical Gardens

White Fritillaria

Bleeding Heart means elegance; fidelity

Daffodils are still in bloom.

Asparagus in the daffodil patch. Don't know how it got there. Didn't even see it until I looked at daffodils in camera viewfinder. There were a couple of other asparagus growing there too.

Columbine (aquilegia) in the language of flowers means desertion; folly.

Grape Hyacinth- about 10 x larger than in real life!

Virginia bluebells (Bluebells in a boquet mean constancy; kindness; humility

It was very, very windy today. And when you are inexperienced like me with a camera it makes it a little difficult to take good photos. (I have to blame something, you know). It was quite a bit cooler today too. We had lots more heavy rain yesterday and close to freezing temps last night. We may actually have a freeze next week. Global warming? I'm not convinced!

ambersunsets I like the way the first two shots are going in different directions. I think the wind added a cool effect to this set.
That's funny about the asparagus:))
Superb set!

DancingDolphin WIND.... the nemesis of photographers! I've stood over things SO many times waiting for the wind to stop! That said, if you hadn't told us, we wouldn't know.... you did great! The bleeding heart is my favorite, such an odd name isn't it! :-)
DancingDolphin · 2008-04-27: 09:00
