Garden Miscellany

2008.05.03
This is all that is left of the new dwarf peach tree. The deer thought I brought them a snack. Next time you see this tree it will be full of dial soap bars hanging from the branches. It is supposed to be a deer deterrant. We'll see.

Something continues to snap off my tulips and throw them on the ground before they even bloom.

And all the daffodils are starting to die.

I bought a new hydrangea bush. Depending upon the soil the flowers may turn blue or pink or a combination. The old dryer lint I've been saving all year and use for mulch kind of matches.

Roses love coffee grounds, banana peels and egg shells. May not look too pretty now, but the roses will be nice later...if the deer leave my rose bushes alone long enough. BTW, I hear Starbucks gives away bags of coffee grounds. I wouldn't know, I've never been there. But if you do go and have roses, pick yourself up a bag.

Cherry, peach, plum, pear and apple trees are in bloom. I hope there is a good fruit crop this year.

Lady's mantle has been catching lots of raindrops lately. The generic name for Lady's Mantle, Alchemilla, is derived from the Arabic word, Alkemelych (alchemy), and was bestowed on it, according to some old writers, because of the wonder-working powers of the plant. Others held that the alchemical virtues lay in the subtle influence the foliage imparted to the dewdrops that lay in its furrowed leaves and in the little cup formed by its joined stipules, these dewdrops constituting part of many mystic potions.

Each day is a different trip to the garden. You never know what you will find or who or what you will meet. It's often a source of frustration and disappointment. It's often a source of joy. It's always a wonderland.

Queen911 I see I have a lot to learn on growing flowers. I think lunch hours should be spent at my home in the garden (laughter)

TheCrazyCroat How I love your garden pics. I'm learning so much about you. My husband has roses and I'm going to tell him about the coffee, banana's and egg shells. This is coffee that's been perked? Do you take it all and just keep adding more?

Can you tell me more about the lint?
