The Mighty Mississippi

2008.06.18
The sky bridge.

The band stand.

A dry patch.

Movin' on down the road.

The statue now looks kind of like a light house now since it is surrounded by water.

Friend Marsha (Queen911) dragged me down to the sky bridge during the lunch hour so we could take flood photos. I have never been there. I am afraid of heights and even more afraid when there are big sections of glass that make up the sky bridge floor. I always prefer to have both feet firmly planted on the ground. Marsha (Queen911) , on the other hand, always has her head in the clouds ;-)

I nervously clutched the handrail while walking along and caught the eye of another lady walking the opposite direction who must have felt the same as me about walking on glass and skybridges because she gave me a faint little knowing smile that said "me too, honey."

Anyway, here is how the flood looks in our part of Iowa. This is downtown Davenport which is down hill a few miles from our work place. I think the Mississippi River (or Big Muddy), which is what you see here, crested today.

I don't know what there is about flood waters, but it brings out all sorts of gawkers. I would have liked to have been able to stay a while longer just to take pictures of the gawkers. Maybe next lunch hour.

Well, we didn't get our feet wet and are keeping our heads above water (most of the time) and my feet are back firmly planted on the ground, thank goodness.

DancingDolphin WOW.... these are impressive! What a mess all this flooding has been making for people everywhere. It's pretty cool that you had such a great place to take photos from (even though I completely understand the height thing!)... those photos taken from up high give a great perspective. Well done oh fearless friend! :-)

pzf64 So devastating ~ my in-laws are in Iowa City & it's so sad. All the homes and businesses and livelihoods lost. These photos definitely tell the same story. Glad you're back on safe ground!!

jenjung Wow, I hope the waters recede soon too! I've never experienced anything like that so I would probably be one of the people out gawking at it
