Balloons in June

2008.06.20
Ok, someone make a decision! Will the show go on?

Ok, it would have been nice if I had gotten the men's feet in the picture too. But I was intent on getting the blue sky, the farm in the background, the hot air balloon trailer, queen911 taking a photo and these men carrying something heavy - all in one picture. I don't know what was in the bag but the guys reminded me pall bearers carrying a casket. But they were smiling.

One guy exhibited his kite flying skills. He was so good I thought it was some new-fangled remote-controlled kite! (Is there such a thing?)

And everyone waits...

These balloonists decided since they weren't going to fly in their beautiful balloon to get out a few kites to fly against a tilting horizon. (Note to self: I should figure out how to straighten that in Photoshop Elements.)

Despite the tilting horizon they got their kite up with no problems. Why isn't it ever that easy when I try it? (Are there remote controlled kites?)

Some ladies steal a peek (against a tilting horizon - guess I shouldn't have had that glass of wine before I was kidnapped) at a basket (do they call those gondolas?) and a trailer that appears to have feet! I didn't realize the baskets were so tall. Do they use ladders to get in them?

Hey, what's going on here?

It's hard to imagine the massive size of these balloons.

Balloon and kites.

A rainbow

All blown up with hot air. Now what?

Inside - kids were amazed by it all...

...and so were some adults.

Laura (picturemom) looking for the perfect shot. C'mon, Laura, it's time to go.(I think the balloon and it's heavy contents of people were tipping the horizon to the left a little on this one)

And the band played on...

Queen911 (Marsha) decided to kidnap me and take me to "Balloons in June" - a hot air balloon festival in Clinton, Iowa which is about 1/2 hr away from my house. I think she also kidnapped Picturemom (Laura) since she was in the car too when I was picked up and whisked away. (Marsha believes I spend entirely too much free time staring at my flowers and wants me to broaden my horizons - instead, I ended up tilting my horizons as you can see ;-) ).

When we left my house it was raining buckets. By the time we got to Clinton we found blue skies. We thought the fest would go on and we would all be snapping away at some brilliantly colored balloons in the sky. It was not to be so.

After standing around for a while wondering if anything was going to happen, we saw a guy with a large and evidently very strong fan start to blow up an old, threadbare balloon. They told us we could go inside along with everybody else so we did.

I guess it was too windy to go up, up and away in their beautiful balloons, although I didn't feel much wind. So we decided to get something to eat and go home. And, thankfully, Marsha got me home safe and sound before my 8:30 pm bedtime ;-)

See Queen911 and Picturemom blogs for their version of the story coming to you sometime soon!

mystic1 Very good action shots, I be one of those kite type of people :) Have not done much this year, but I don't think they have a remote control kite haha but that sounds like a good idea :) The kite in #3 is a fighter kite it sure does look like remote control, looks like you had a blast

photopoet O.K. I'm right there hoping that they get those things up in the air. I, too, love kites—no remote control on those babies. Wonderful series.
