Amidst mosquito bites and the hot sun I bring you daylilies from the garden - different ones from yesterday - and probably different ones from tomorrow.
As I mentioned yesterday, daylilies aren't really lilies. The botanical name hemerocallis comes from the Greek "hemero" or "hemera" meaning "day" and "kalos" or "callis" meaning "beautiful". The beautiful blooms last literally only one day. But hemerocallis are like weeds, they grow most anywhere, are practically maintenance free, grow into bigger clumps year after year so you can share some with friends, and come in many different shapes, sizes and colors. You really don't have to have a green thumb to grow daylilies. Around here they even grow wild in ditches.
When I retire I would like to try to breed a couple different daylilies of my own. I would name them after beautiful people I have known. Someday...
