We (my two granddaughters Kayla and Isabelle, my husband John and I) left at around 5:30 for a 2 hr drive to the campsite. John's brother Bert, wife Gail and daughter Olivia from Texas were already at the campsite as well as his brother Marty and wife Barb and their two grandchildren, Summer and Savannah. More family arrived in the days ahead. The sunrise was beautiful. The temperature was hot. The air was humid.

Shortly after arrival and we got our camper set up, I took the girls on a long hike down to the beach. The walk was nice but the beach was not. The lake was murky and dirty and evidently full of bacteria from the recent flooding in the area.

I pointed out some bee balm to the girls and asked if they could find some like it while on our hike. They all managed to spot some as well as some of the other flowers I pointed out to them.

Summer in the bee balm. It was difficult to get pictures of the other girls because Summer wanted to be in all the pictures. What a camera hog! She will be 6 next month and is 2nd cousin to my granddaughters.

Isabelle found a snail she carried and watched during our entire journey back to camp. (Since she has on sneakers this may be from one of our other walks. We went on several)

The sign to the trail had a picture of a guy hiking on it. While we were walking I told the girls a scary story that involved "hiking guy"- a big foot type of creature that got lost in the woods one day while out hiking. They love scary stories and the rest of the nights of camping we enjoyed a new story around the campfire about the scary "hiking guy". Here they pause to listen for sounds of "hiking guy" who may be looking for them!

Geode State Park is in Danville, Iowa. It is where some of my husband's family gathered for a family reunion this year.
The Geode is Iowa's state rock. We did see geodes while on one of our hikes but it is illegal to take them from public property so we left them, of course.
