Datura

2008.08.25

Didn't plant it, didn't pull it. A weed it is.
Datura Inoxia, Angel's Trumpet, Devil's Trumpet, Thornapple, Jimson Weed, Zombie Cucumber - there are several names for it.

It's quite a plant. It blooms at night and early morning and then the blooms wither during the day. The seed pod is a prickly ol' thing. Very ugly.

Don't mess with it. It contains scopolamine and I've heard tell some use it to make zombies.

DancingDolphin Hmmmm.... would another name be "Moonflower"???? Looks very similar and the seed pod sounds exactly the same. I LOVE them and actually PLANTed them for a number of years. One man's weed is another man's flower! Nice shots!

Judith28 If you hadn't told me it was a weed, I would have thought it was a lovely flower.

bundlesofjoy Yes it is known as a Moonflower, I prefer Angel's Trumpet. They attract hummingbirds quiet nicely. They smell nice. They are very hard to get rid of though. Each bloom turns into a seed pod filled with seeds and were it falls more grow. My Mother has one in her yard that is really large. http://www.photoblog.com/bundlesofjoy/2008/06/27/
Great shots!
