Making Pumpkin Pies With Little Pumpkins

2008.09.05

The pumpkins ripened early this year. And they are smaller than usual. But they still make good pie.

Making Pumpkin Pie With Little Pumpkins.

First the grandkids, my favorite little pumpkins, posed with the pumpkins we harvested from the garden. Then Grandpa took the pie pumpkins into the kitchen and cut, cleaned and chopped them while the girls observed while perched on their little stools. We put them into a roaster and cooked for about one and a half hours which was just enough time to watch "Charlotte's Web", Kayla's favorite movie. And Isabelle said it was a funny land where she would really like to live. I cried when Charlotte died after giving birth to her 514 children (this was the first time I'd seen the movie) and grandpa said "don't feel bad, I aways cry at that part too." After the movie we went to the kitchen and took the pumpkin out of the oven to cool. Then we started making the pie crust. Homemade crust is always flakier, always tastier. It's even better made with lard but we only had shortening. We rolled the crust out like playdo and and talked about Peter Pumpkin-Eater and Little Jack Horner and his pie all the while. I scooped the warm pumpkin from the rind, blenderized it and the girls laughed at all the noise then held their hands over their ears so they wouldn't have to hear it. We mixed the rest of the ingredients and slid the crusts full of pumpkin filling into the oven to bake. Then Isabelle wanted to read the cookbook herself. . When I asked her what it said she and Kayla read off (remembered) all the ingredients they had added to the pumpkin except for the sugar. While the pies baked the girls took a little nap. Then it was time for a treat. Isabelle wasn't sure she liked pumpkin pie. Kayla finished her piece.
