Oh yes I can tell the weather's bad - you're not out and about bug hunting. Same here; I was thinking this morning of trying to replicate Harold Edgerton's Milk Crown. Your shot's are certainly impressive - as I was looking at then Ben came across the room proclaiming, "whoa, those ore good"! I'm not saying it's right be here's what I'd do: - Use what ever you can to get as much light as possible on the subject, preferably several different sources to minimize shadows. - Fix your camera in position with tripod, bean bag or whatever contraption you can make. - Try to be as controlled as possible in managing the water droplet - I found that one of those little syringes you get with baby medicine works quite well as a dropper, but I'm sure there's other solutions. - I set my camera to shoot continuously as quickly as possible. - Get an assistant so that you don't personally have to do everything.

Wow. These are beautiful. A method for creating the "droplet" is to suspend a plastic bag above the dish and put a small pinhole in the bag to provide a continuous supply of droplets.

These are all very wonderful, #3 is Excellent. I believe that this, like catching lightening, takes a patient hand, a willingness to never give up, and lots and lots of extra shots that produce nothing....you did a great job.

Nice Ricky! You have a DSLR now...and a great choice at that! I have to agree with those others who recommend getting as much light onto the water as possible...more light = higher shutter speed. And capturing a water droplet is all about shutter speed. I would experiment with setting the camera to Tv (shutter priority) a selecting the highest speed available, then adjusting the amount of light until you get a proper exposure.

Super for a first try, I think trial and error is the only way without special equipment and stroboscopes. 3 out of 100 is probably what you have to count on. Pity the D3000 doesn't take videos otherwise you could film the drop and then extract the stills (you could probably do that with your mobile phone ;) ) but maybe it does "bursts"?
