362. Pill Bug

Armadillidium vulgare aka Common Pill bug (baby)

I got shocked about how good these macros were! honestly, when I did my earwig last time they got ok, but these in my opinion are really good!

These small bugs are very funny! I remember when I was a child, I used to see them and touch them, so that they get like balls :)
Do you have any situation like this? I'd like to know :)
These bugs are harmless and they can live up to 3 years!
they eat decaying things, and they don't like the sun very much!

They look much creepier on my macros, but they are very friendly :)

if you've not seen, check:
Macro the world
????? Ewwww. . .RICKY! I hate these bugs. Don't get me wrong, your photos are FANTASTIC. But EWWWW!

When I was a young(er) girl, I ate a Daddy long legs so the boy that was trying to kiss me would stop. True story.

DancingDolphin You're right, they turned out great. Is it on a white paper?

We have something that looks VERY similar (I don't recall those long things out front) but call them Roly Poly's... same behavior, the kids love them because they curl up in a ball when you touch them.

karmankwarner We have these, we call them RolliePollies.....touch them and they roll up....very nice captures.

Jarvo Fascinating post Ricky. I love woodlice, or as we like to call them, Woodpigs. Did you know that they were originally called pillbugs because the Ancient Romans used to swallow them whole as medicine. Not all woodlice roll up though your Armadillo type are best known for it. Also, the reason they like (need) the damp is because they breathe through gills.

livelovelaugh The macros are fantastic! I never knew what they are called, but when you mentioned that they curl up into a ball, I remembered seeing them when I was younger. We just called them the ball bug. :)))

finbarr · 2010-12-28: 06:14
lookagain Wow...these shots are super, Ricky! I think these are much the same as what we call "rollie-pollies," but our don't have the big bent antennae. At least I don't think so because I've never seen a macro of one!
lookagain · 2010-12-28: 08:04
