Khor Virap is a castled monastery in the Ararat Valley of Armenia. The legend says that in 288 the pagan Armenian king Trdat arrested here the Christian preacher Grigor Lusavoritch. For 13 years Grigor lived in the pit full of poisonous snakes. But then Trdat suddenly freed him and took Christianity (301). Thus Armenia became the first Christian state in the world. In the 7th century they built a small chapel of limestone over the pit. In the 1662 the monks and local people erected this beautiful monastery. Well, the pit is still there and every traveler or pilgrim is able to see it.
