Old Barysau is a part of the city of Barysau. It is situated to the north of the Berezina River, while New Barysau is situated to the south. Any person that comes to the city would think that Old Barysau was the first ancient settlement, while New Barysau was founded much later. In reality, the first settlement was built around the castle in the 12th century in the place of the village Stary Barysau to the east of the modern city. It was burnt during the Napoleonic War of 1812. Both, Old and New Barysau, were founded only in the 19th century. New Barysau grew around the railway station. Old Barysau was a trading and administrative part of the city. The population of the city was traditionally devided into three communities. The largest one was Jewish. Jews controlled all local trade. Orthodox and Catholic Christians worked in matches and glass industries. The Orthodox Holy Resurrection cathedral and old Catholic church are two main attractions. During the World War II the Jewish community was destroyed by Nazis. At our time the building of the synagogue is abandoned. A small number of local Jews are not able to restore it. But there are many buildings of former Jewish shops in Old Barysau. The windows of those buildings are wide and low because they were used for trading (buyers were usually serviced outside).
