A small town of Hlybokaye is situated in the north of Belarus, in so called “Country of Lakes”. Its name is translated literally as Deep, because it was founded in the 15th century on the Deep Lake. It was a calm trading place populated by Belarusian and Jewish craftsmen and merchants. Time by time different wars broke its slow life and local people left their trade to take swords. For instance, in 1661 this town was precipitated by Russians (without any success). In six years later the townsfolk destroyed a large band of Hungarian marauders. In 1812 Napoleon stopped in Hlybokaye for several days and even signed here a special document calling the people to support him in his war against Russia.
Nowadays, Hlybokaye is known in Belarus with its large powdered and tined milk industry. For travelers it is attractive with its three lakes (and there are many lakes around the town), the arboretum, and beautiful baroque St Trinity and St Virgin Mary Cathedrals. Local life is quickly changed with the rapid economical growth, but it is still possible to find here traditional wooden cottages and charm of the province.

PS. I bought there a kilogram of a local cheese for the Belarusian equivalent of 2 euros only. My wife very liked it.
