Mangup is a plateau in the south of Crimea that thanks to its water sources and pregnable descents was used as a shelter for people. In the 5th century Gothic refugees founded in Mangup the city of Doros. They adopted Orthodox Christianity and jealously supported their union with Byzantium. For instance, in the 7th century they expelled Judaic conquerors of Khazaria. Gothic settlers were seen in Crimea by the 18th century, while in Western Europe they evanesced much earlier. In the 13th century Greek settlers migrated to Mangup to make their life and families secure of the Tartars. The Greek principality of Theodore with the center in Mangup existed by the Ottoman invasion of 1475.
