Mass Observation Project - Eating

Those of us who came from the 1940's have seen changes in our eating and preparing food just as earth shaking as the huge technological changes we've experienced in our lifetime. We've gone from chicken and dumplings, fried chicken, strawberry shortcake which at that time did not have any calories to the new school lunches where children get a piece of celery and 1/4 of an apple for lunch. We've gone from the woman of the house reigning supreme in the kitchen to everybody in the kitchen preparing gourmet meals. We've gone from never dining out to eating out once or twice a week. We've gone from eating because it was good to eating to make a political statement. It's pretty hard for some of us who still remember when chicken and noodles had no calories.
ilikethat Excellent observational post

Keryl How true...I agree completely. Some change is good but when it comes to meal time, the old ways cannot be replaced. I still set the table... even when it's just two for dinner.
Nice take on the theme!

karmankwarner Very Nicely Done....I can remember when cooking together was something that was passed from mother to daughter and family secrets were guarded closely.....

ArtBee Bravo Bravo Bravo! Family sit down meals eating wholesome comfort food is not the norm today for sure......Fast foods on one end of the spectrum and vegetarian on the other.....Thanks for your great insight!

livelovelaugh Excellent post, Diane. Just so you know, I still don't think they have any calories. :)

NellyBly So true! However, my children still call for Chicken and dumplings and strawberry shortcake! I bake chicken or grill..though sometimes fry chicken strips in a small amount of oil :-) We never ate out..didn't have all of the fast food places or nice places either! I can remember mom treating us when shopping to a cherry coke and sandwich at a corner drugstore and that was a delightful splurge..
