Reedel olid esimesed õiepungad ja ööl vastu laupäeva puhkeski õide. Jõulukaktus on siis ca 150 aastat tagasi Inglismaal aretatud ja pärineb Lõuna-Ameerikast, leviala ca 1000-1500m kõrgusel mägedes. Pidi korraliku hooldusega elama ca 100 aastat ja kauemgi. õitsemisperiood on siis kui 4-6 nädalat tavapärasest külmemad ilmad olnud.
