Drowning

2007.02.02

A boy, near Sadarghat, seen struggling to retain balance while swimming in the river.

Children swimming in rivers, ponds and other water-bodies, often drown due to unforeseen accidents.

Drowning is becoming proportionately more significant as a major cause of death, accounting for 19% of deaths of children between 1-4 years of age. Submersion injuries are a significant cause of death and disability in children, second only to accidental trauma. At least one third of survivors sustain moderate to severe neurological trauma.

The area of communities where most drowning cases occur are poor, with ownership of only basic goods. Livelihoods have a direct impact on child drowning in floods, most children of such families, drown when their parents are working.
