Whiterock Birds

The Coots were jumping off the dam to land on the spillway. They would gather around and watch one jump then mull around trying to figure who would go next.

There goes another one with his buddy watching in the background.

And another one bites the dust.

This one came in from the other direction and looks like he thinks he made a mistake.
|
Past the point of no return and as most flight recorders on planes report, the last thing a crashing pilot says is "Oh shit".

Not sure what this is but he/she didn't mind having a photo taken.

I love the color on this one's head.

I think that this one is a different kind of duck.

I've been close enough to a Redwing for several years and finally this one landed about 20 feet from me. He stayed there for quite a while and I got twenty or so shots.

In this one he flared his wings so I could see both red spots.

This Sizzortail is the only flying shot I have of one. These are really fast movers. I only got about three shots and that's because people started laughing at the antics I was having to go through to get the shot and well he was just too blasted fast. My autofocus could not keep up with him at 500mm and neither could I.

This guy popped up from below this part of the dam to land on the edge. I spotted his head looking over the edge, anticipated that he might jump, and focused on that and he popped up.

This is the bird in the previous shot. He paraded back and forth on the dam for at least an hour giving me plenty of shots.

This was shot from the opposite direction hence the change in light.

These Mallards were roosting under a Mesquite tree to get a little shade.

Finally the Egret gave up and flew away. This was after about an hour in and around the same location.

Needed some shots of Whiterock Lake for a contest they are having. These are some of the outtakes from todays shooting. I played with the first five in Photoshop but with minimal adjustments, mostly contrast, saturation, cropping, and brightness. Hope you enjoy them.

Wow, you got some great birds... I believe that duck with the green head is a Mallard....

You got some great shots - Where were these taken? Yes, the green headed (?) Duck is a Mallard and very beautiful!!! And the white ones are egrets Believe me, I am NOT a bird expert, but I am in FLorida and we have many of the same birds. Very Great captures!!!
