Summer in Texas

2012.07.05
pixel
Summer in Texas always brings on the preverbial grass fires. This one covered around 50-60 acres. This time some farmer got luckey. The fire destroyed the hay not the cattle in a pasture just to the west. If the wind had been a little more out of the east it would have taken out the cows. You can see more detail when enlarged.

Although they call them grassfires they take out a lot more.

Not far from the point of origin.

The fire was fairly fast but fortunately the firemen were able to get ahead of it before it got too bad.

Emergency workers saved this barn which was right in the path.

They had knocked down the edge of the fire just before I got there. Here they were going back over the perimeter to make sure it was out.

This truck and the previous one were working out from a central point directly in front of me.

I'm not sure why they saved the barn in the background. It looks like it is on it's last legs.

You can see the barn a little better in this one with the ring of unburned grass around it. Look just to the right and above the barn. You can see the skeleton of another structure in the background. I couldn't get close enough to tell if it was burned or just a new construction's frame.

Summertime in Texas brings the inevitable "grass fires". This one started right at the edge of the road. I wonder why? You see many more of these in the summer than in the winter. Could it be because people have their car windows up in the winter and down more often in the summer?
