Avery Island, La

2012.07.15
pixel
Avery Island, home to the only plant in the world producing Tabasco Sauce, which we were told is shipped to over 120 countries around the world.
pixel
We agreed to disagree. He thought he was camoflaged, I didn't think so.
pixel
This is not the look you want to see.
pixel
This one was swimming at an angle to me, then...
pixel
He noticed me and started to turn toward me.
pixel
It was full speed ahead and I decided to move to the other side of the car.
pixel
I know he's thinking, should I eat it or not.
pixel
Oh great, not there are two of them. I got shots with as many as four around his head.
pixel
I don't know the correct names of most of the birds so If anyone can supply them, I'll add them to the series. Friends have provided names for me. This is a Snowy Egret.
pixel
This one was just about to sit down on the nest and cover the egg. This one is a Cattle Egret.
pixel
The color of the birds on the next four shots was spectacular. These are Roseate Spoonbills.
pixel
Same Roseates and some Anhinga.
pixel
This one came across too fast and low to get a frontal shot and did not repeat his trip. Reseate Spoonbill in flight.
pixel
This appears to be a staredown between a Roseate and an Anhinga.
pixel
The next four are Snowy Egrets.
pixel
pixel
The three squabled the entire time we were there. They reminded me of Larry, Curly, and Moe.
pixel
Still fussing
pixel
This Spoonbill landed on the other side of the tree like he was trying to hide from me but couldn't keep his balance and kept flapping his wings making it impossible to hide.
pixel
Don't know what this bird is but it was beautiful. It struck several poses giving me plenty of shots. Cattle Egret a little fluffed out.
pixel
The next two are Anhinga and not quite sure on the last one.
pixel
It's a little hard to tell but I think that the butterfly on the lower left is in danger of getting eaten.
pixel
I looked up to see what he was looking at but I didn't see a thing.
pixel
Avery Island south of New Iberia, La was our second stop of the trip. Rumor is you can smell the Tabasco porcessing plant from 10 miles away. I could just barely smell it from inside the plant. What was amazing about the area was the wildlife especially the water birds, but the gators were pretty impressive especially when they turned while swimming and headed straight for you. Time to leave the bank and get in the car.

NellyBly Love all of these birds...those gators are dangerous for sure..I'm glad you got back in the car..they can come on land and get you, ya know :-) Beautiful Roseate Spoonbills..and the yellow tufted one looks like a breeding adult Egret in my bird book..Love all the shots! Some friends have a camp at Avery Island..We have never been to the Tabasco plant..looks like a bird paradise, we'll have to travel over there! Thanks for sharing :-)
