Established in 1862 and open 24 hours a day except Christmas and the occasional hurricane. Located on the corner of Decatur and St. Ann right by Jackson Square and less than 50 yards from the Mississippi River, it is a hub for both locals and tourists. If you go to New Orleans, it's one of the places you can't miss.

You never know what will happen. This man and a couple of companions set up just over the rail from where we were sitting. He played a couple of notes from the Saints and then announced his first number. Amazing Grace. Almost immediately the crowd at Cafe du Monde began to sing, not just a couple of people but almost everyone in the cafe was singing.

A group of kids leaving the cafe stopped and began to clap and really sing with enthuiasm. My wife (lower right) joined in claping and singing. I was singing too, but it's hard to shoot and sing at the same time.

Finally after the hymn was over the youth group crowded around and said a prayer over the musician. I think you call that a God Thing.

Not a great photo, not a good photo, but probably the most dangerous shot I've ever taken. Janie was just turning to face me and trying to wipe the powdered sugar off her face before I could take the shot. She didn't make it.
Note the sugar on the plate and fingers. I'm dead when she sees I posted this one.

Parting Cafe du Monde for the last time this trip. I'm sitting here wanting a coffee and a bunch of beignets right now and it's 11:15 p.m.

New Orleans' Cafe du Monde, beignets and coffee! I know that somewhere in the Louisana laws there is a requirement that anyone visiting New Orleans must go to Cafe du Monde. If it isn't, it should be. French donuts covered with powdered sugar, although calling them donuts is really a misnomer. Heaven would be a more appropriate word, and the coffee is pretty good too. You never know what will happen there.
