first stop: hong kong
After days of packing, cleaning and eBaying, we finally got on the plane to Hong Kong. I silently vomited into a baggie after taking Stilnox and feeling very groggy (then later read online about a Sydney man who had taken Stilnox and jumped off a building to his death while he was sleeping).
Hong Kong is so great! It's a shame we only have four days here as there's so much to do. It's a nice way to ease into our backpacking trip as we're staying in an executive suite at a good hotel with buffet brekkie everyday and free internet - yay!
I splurged on a chunky new 30D camera and started snapping on HK island - so many chic little streets and cafes that make the island seem quite European. Madonna must be big here - as she's playing in every single retail store and there are ads for her new H&M line on the streets everywhere.
Funniest thing we've seen: the "New Zealand Fun Fun Show". Yesterday at a plush harbourside department store Tourism NZ had set up a stand in the middle of the shopping centre. Shoppers were invited onstage to follow a video of Maoris doing the haka and then perform in front of a crowd. Their performance was judged by an audience clap-o-meter. The winning guy ripped off his shirt mid-performance to reveal his weedy torso. Funny Asian campness.
Weirdest product we've seen: the sheep's placenta beauty product, proudly stamped 'Made in Australia'. Fresh placenta... on... your... skin... ewe.
