After Sunset

2010.01.30
pixel
I took the tripod out today hoping to catch something special in the magic hour around sunset and I wasn't disappointed. This first shot saw me return to Bitterne Way - a very local vantage point from which I'd captured a fine sunset view just over a year ago. This time I put several shots together into an HDR.

The proximity of the moon leads to lower than average low tides - I ventured off the slipway and onto the shingle bank to capture this image of the Itchen Bridge looking towards the sunset. My choice of vantage points was limited, however, by my desire to hide a distracting crane behind one of the bridge supports.

Here's the Itchen Bridge taken shortly afterwards from the other side side. Having investigated the times and angles of the moon rise in The Photographer's Ephemeris I determined that I could capture the moon rising beneath the bridge. All I had to do was wait for the clouds to clear. the speck at the top of the image is Mars.

I briefly contemplated trying an HDR of this scene before deciding that the moon moves far too quickly: it moves it's own diameter every 30 seconds, my exposure times were typically several seconds at f/8
