Perceptions

2007.01.09

Once, on a road in Utah, I caught a glimpse of what looked like a dried ram's skull. The skull, bone white from the dry heat, rested in a dry ditch to the right of the road.

Did you see that? No. I think, I said, it's similar to a Georgie O'Keefe ram's skull. Probably not, she said. After another twenty minutes, at a constant speed hovering between 70mph and 75mph, I said, It's not often you find a dried ram's skull. What do you want to do? I want, I said, to turn around. So we turned around.

When the scenery looks similar for miles finding a particular location requires patience, but we did find the spot. I pulled over as far as possible and got out of the car. Instead of a dried ram's skull I recognized a partially destroyed bleach bottle.

So I'm not saying what this is in the tree.
