Harvard Square—Across From Harvard Yard

2007.02.12

Yesterday, Harvard University selected their first woman president. She will "juggle the demands of 2,500 faculty members, 20,000 students, and an annual budget of $3 billion—all in the glare of the public spotlight."

Yesterday afternoon I went down to Cambridge, not to be present at this event, but to search for some particular books. It's always a struggle to find a parking space —at least on Sunday the persnickety meter maids aren't present.

Yesterday, I walked down Mass Ave. I had my small Sony camera in my pocket. I call it my sketch pad—see something , take a quick picture.

Yesterday, warmer than the blustery below freezing temperatures still barely broke the freezing mark.

Yesterday, in front of the Harvard Coop a pile of blankets and a trash bag seemed just that until I saw a woman raise her head.

Yesterday, a man huddled on the ground holding a sign that read : "Maybe I am ugly, smelly and homeless But I still get hungry."

Yesterday, three men had their belongings piled together while one man held out a cup.

Yesterday, a woman sat in front of a restaurant. Her dog sat on her belongings.

Yesterday, a store sold Rolex watches fifty feet away from a disoriented man.

The woman with the dog said, "Take my picture. Pay me like a model."

Yesterday, I bought corn muffins at an upscale coffee house and gave those out. Across the way they poured champaign to celebrate the selection of a new Harvard president.

I left.

On the way to my car I walked down Church Street and took the photo of the mural.

At the intersection a man approached the stopped cars.

Yesterday.

jpfromoz This is nearly a great magazine story - you obviously really feel their pain though so I don't mean to "cheapen" what you have done by suggesting that you should submit this for publication but I think you should consider it. Excellent stuff.

crabalocker I skimmed through these earlier. I came back and looked properly and was really touched and also impressed with your confidence. I then read your words and was totally captivated. Thank you for drawing me in!

Jannie Your post really evokes a lot of emotion as I look at it. Leapfrog said it very well. I always feel sorry for the animals of homeless people & I worry about them more than their owners. Maybe because they really don't have the choices we humans have?
