Dichotomy

While the date is Tuesday this is being posted Monday evening. Sunday night a rain storm swept through the area. The organizers of the Boston Marathon decided that the marathon would go on as planned. This morning thousands of runners lined up in Hopkinton. The rains continued, puddles lined the route, cold winds followed the runners—yet most of the runners took off to either vie for a win or a personal best. Hundreds of runners ran to raise money for a variety of charities. Despite the weather they ran—all nationalities, all ages.

Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya won the Boston Marathon for the third time today, defending his title in the remnants of a soaking nor’easter in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 13 seconds. Russia’s Lidiya Grigoryeva captured the women’s race in 2:29:18.

Then later in the day I heard about the massacre —

At least 33 people were killed on the campus of Virginia Tech today in what appears to be the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history. Many of the victims were students.

In one day. It makes no sense. No sense.
