This Morning's Walk

Before I do anything else in the morning, I'm out the door for a three mile walk. I've an old pair of kaki shorts with lots of pockets and a collection of well worn t-shirts—all with some sort of graffiti, sayings, quotes—my outfit for the walk.

For the last few days I've been thinking about the novel. "How do you know," I say to myself, "that you can't muster up the discipline to go from the first line to the last period?" "And," I add," forget about will it be good—just think of creating a first draft."

This morning I gave myself a break from that interior monologue and concentrated on the cooler morning air. Before long I found several treasures for my pockets—and snippets of thoughts about writing went into my pocket along with the crabapples.

As for writing, I like this thought: Eighty percent of success is showing up.
