The Old Ones

2007.09.03
"Bandelier National Monument is located in north-central New Mexico on the eastern side of the geologically young Jemez Mountains. Situated on the gently sloping Pajarito Plateau, Bandelier is bordered on the south by the Rio Grande and to the west by the San Miguel Mountains."

The ladder allowed you to crawl inside —and envision what it was to occupy the room.

"The Old Ones come to me in their song-misty dance..."–Wendy Rose

"How you sing those old mountain songs."—Wendy Rose

"...tuff, which is full of natural cavities - originally air pockets in ash deposits from volcanic eruptions several thousand years ago. These may be several meters in diameter, and were used by the Ancient Pueblo peoples between 700 and 450 years ago as the basis of their villages. Selected cavities were enlarged, linked together and augmented to form clusters of dwellings in many places over several miles of this rocky land southeast of the Jemez Mountains. The ash originated from volcanoes at the site of Valle Grande Peak, a few miles to the west.

I wonder why these cliffs and homes
of ancestral pueblo farmers
who grew maize, beans and corn
who knew the native plants
who hunted deer and birds
who hunted native mammals
and made clothing from animal skins
and traded for cotton
who wove blankets from yucca fibers
who lived here for more than 400 years
who lived in small settlements of one or two families
who scattered through these mountains
who sometime between 1150 and 1325
began coming together in larger groups
who built villages we call pueblos
with as many as forty rooms
who increased during the next two centuries
and built larger structures
who built kivas to worship their gods
who disappeared and moved on by the middle of the 1500s

I wonder why when men from the Cochiti Pueblo
guided a self taught anthropologist
to their ancestral home in Frijoles Canyon
on the slopes of the Jemez mountains
and showed the man the sheer cliffs,
the year round stream, the talus slopes
I wonder why this land
took on the name of the man—Bandelier?

We spent the day exploring the ancestral pueblo landscape.

chipotle and the anasazi ... just disappeared.

i lived in farmington for several years as a child. we went to mesa verde regularly. the cliff-dwellers occupied a special place in my imagination.

your words and images capture wonderfully the mystery of the place.
