The Sacred

Young ponderosa trees are called blackjacks—

"...crawl, on hands and knees, over the sandstone and through the...cactus. When traces of blood begin to mark your trail you'll see something, maybe."—Edward Abbey

“Architecture is inhabited sculpture”

"I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in." ~John Muir, 1913,

"wilderness courts our soul..." —Terry Tempest Williams

"The relationship between language and landscape is a marriage of sound and form, an oral geography, a sensual topography, what draws us to a place and keeps us there. Where we live is the center of how we speak."—Terry Tempest Williams

I touch the Earth because there are so many things I do not see.
—Ålex Caldiero

"Benedicto: May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds. May your rivers flow without end, meandering through pastoral valleys tinkling with bells, past temples and castles and poets' towers into a dark primeval forest where tigers belch and monkeys howl, through miasmal and mysterious swamps and down into a desert of red rock, blue mesas, domes and pinnacles and grottos of endless stone, and down again into a deep vast ancient unknown chasm where bars of sunlight blaze on profiled cliffs, where deer walk across the white sand beaches, where storms come and go as lightning clangs upon the high crags, where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits for you—beyond the next turning of the canyon walls."— Edward Abbey

The first time I went out to the Southwest a friend gave me Abbey's book Desert Solitaire . He was a quirky character who loved the Southwest.

kangshung Another awesome set of photos! The b&w shots are almost 3-D with amazing tonal range. I had you pigeon-holed as an urban photographer but will now be revising that.

chipotle interesting is understatement.

i have to compliment you again on your B&Ws. none of them turned into a sea of gray. they all have such beautiful contrast. i know effectively catching the shadows on the adobe had to be tricky.
