Contrasts

2007.10.25
city—"City people live the city. We live in ... places where it's chaotic and you never know what's gonna happen. And that's the music - you never know what's gonna happen."—
—Alice Cooper

country— "How strange that Nature does not knock, and yet does not intrude! " ~Emily Dickinson

urban tag— "Modern graffiti art originated in New York City, and it was known first as "New York Style" graffiti. This art form began in the late 1960's when teens used permanent markers to tag or write their names, followed by the number of the street on which they lived, in subway cars. This trend originated with the appearance of "Taki 183" which was the tag of a Greek American boy named Demitrius. Tagging soon became a way to get one's name known throughout the city. However, it should be noted that tagging appeared in Philadelphia before New York. The monikers, "Cornbread" and "Top Cat" were well known in Philadelphia, and when Top Cat's style appeared in New York, it was dubbed as "Broadway Style" for its long skinny lettering."—C. Stowers

small town—"We didn't realize it at the time, but the release date, the ad campaign and the poster are so important."—
David Zucker

folk art—"It's all make believe, isn't it?"—Marilyn Monroe

museum art—"Because a work does not aim at reproducing the natural appearance it is not... an escape from life... it may be a penetrating into reality... a stimulation to greater effort in living."— Henry Moore

tacky artificial flower—“Little boxes made of ticky-tacky, and they all look just the same”—

Pete Seeger

the real thing—"I'd rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck." ~Emma Goldman

painted landscape— And the books read: writing your own words , finding the right word, poems dancing to an inner rhythm, stories discovering an ending, the pencil drawings, the paintings, the sand castles built, the watercolours bleeding on the paper, crosshatched ink lines defining a rock, the look of a contour line, the paper filling up with words, gestures, lines.

natural path— The roads you take, stop, turn around, go off in other directions, turn around, tread again, return and head off once again. It's the light ahead, the bend, the sound in the distance, the adventure, the reach, the hope, the promise.

Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.
Walt Whitman

Carley A beautiful and intriguing set! A nice reminder that we need the "opposites"...... There is no light without darkness......and the landscapes that I love so much (like #2 and the last one) are even more enjoyable because they are so different from the city!
