“I am addressing myself - I am addressing myself to my cap.” —Moliere

For what has been —thanks! For what shall be —yes! ~ Dag Hammarskjöld

"In ordinary life we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich."
—Dietrich Bonhoeffer

"Hem your blessings with thankfulness so they don't unravel."

A newsboy cap, often associated with newspaper boys or newsies—"hawking their papers throughout every city."

The history of "newsies" is one of abusive child-labor practices and a successful strike in 1899 which eventually led to the passage of some child-labor laws.

This hat—bought five years ago—reminds me of how hats are put on when you go out and taken off, often, when you enter a house. So since I'm into metaphors this week the hat is a metaphor.

A year ago on January 5th 2007 I started to blog, entering photos for every day and posting ahead when I went away. This is now January 5th 2008—a year has gone by. I tip my hat to all of you for your incredibly beautiful, evocative photos and for the sense of family that resides on this blog. We represent many nations, nationalities, religions, beliefs and save for very few incidents there is a respect that is impressive. I have learned a great deal from your work and from your comments and from your humanity.

I'll take off my cap. To post every day was a commitment, but now I need to step back and post less frequently.

Please feel free to stop by my blog—read, post a comment if you want: Lfmarginalia.blogspot.com

I usually post a photo accompanied by a long written piece. I don't put a new post up each day.

Not what we give,
But what we share,
For the gift
without the giver
Is bare.
~James Russell Lowell

I sometimes wonder how some posters are able to come up with their wonderful pics, fantastic texts, and wonderful words to reply to all of their comments. For now, I will continue to try, because of all the things you mention!

For you, I wish you well ... please visit and post when you can. You are a true light.

sunshineand i like your post today
and the fact that you have decided to step back
instead of step out
.
it is always nice to see
that changes do not always have to be me made all at once
but rather can be a more gradual process
like the ocean's waves in calm weather.

i am glad you are still going to post
and i appreciate this writing of recoginition of this place
that has been made for us
and the people that post here.
i agree that it is a special place.

i will give your blog a look-see!
