A Collection of Poets —

2008.02.19
I've found poetry books in used bookstores, library sales, yard sales—I randomly grabbed some titles.

I bought the Galway Kinnell in a bookstore run by an elderly woman who turned her "parlor" into a store. She wrote down every purchase in a well worn ledger and used a metal box in lieu of a cash register. The shelves in her "parlor" sagged and many of the books wore dust as an extra jacket.

I found the Langston Hughes at a yard sale and I received the Lourde as a gift.

I purchased the Judy Grahn after hearing her speak at a conference—Hart Crane's book was on a table of .50 specials.

A Poem of Lines

Have you ever thought seriously about reflections?
—Laura Gilpin

I celebrate myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belong to you.
—Walt Whitman

We will wear new bones again.
—Lucille Clifton

His enemy was a dragon laced with medals.
—Nancy Willard

Far off in the red mangroves
an alligator has heaved himself onto a
hummock of grass
and lies there, studying his poems.
—Mary Oliver

You and I, are we in the same story?
—Marge Piercy

She's a copperheaded waitress,
tired and sharp-worded...
—Judy Grahn

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
—Langston Hughes

Mama Earth is wearing
her mask of drought...
—Wendy Rose

How many miles
into cloudy peaks?
—Galway Kinnell

Grazed through much child-bearing
the moon is staggering in the sky...
—W.B. Yeats

Outside the full moon
watches a large dry leaf
fall to the ground
—Lucy Tapahonso

Cocoanut
has the moon inside
—W.S. Merwin

The blackness somewhere gorged glass on a sky.
—Hart Crane

The first bright day has broken
the back of winter
—Audre Lorde

What happens to a dream deferred?

Peche I love this post. It touches that part of me that is so deeply connected to my love of poetry and expression. WB Yeats, Whitman... :) I was only just reading W.H. Auden last night. I collect books like they are going out of fashion, and have a lot of old poetry books too :) The shots are well composed and in black and white have a very genuine effect.

Queen911 Lorriane Hansberry - you are my kind of person. Langston Hughes, Yeats!!! Long time ago in elementary school we had to learn "Negro" poetry and recite everything. I remember standing up straight and performing for my grandparent's friends. There's a part in the "Great Debater" that brought back lots of memories. The Creation by James Weldon Johson. Wow - you brought back childhood memories. Thanks.

focussed Well I wont comment on the poetry as it has never really been my thing..I'll stick to what really moves me and that is the images. I like the placement on the rug..provides wonderful texture to the paper books. Also the covers on some of those books themselves seem really fascinating. Photo 1 has some lovely tones. :)

Zedsdead Hey, Hart Crane! Not a great swimmer, but a great poet - Repose of Rivers makes so much sense to me.

Great shots. I've tried books on rugs, but Ihey always end up looking so inoccuous.. ?:o)

photopoet "The pond I entered once and quickly fled—
I remember now its singing willow rim."

MHJphotos Lovely shots sir! I agree that the rug, and the BW PP of these shots really adds to their power. #1 is particularly good in my opinion.

Wonderful collection, and beautifully captured.

noptek Nice set. Spring is coming and poetry is blooming.
noptek · 2008-02-21: 00:42
Zedsdead LOL. WEll I was 16 when i read 'Repose', and knew nothing of Crane himself, at that time, so the words were free to be interpreted more generally - we are polar oppposites in orientation! I recognised immediately someone who understood about being troubled, completely outside of things, and I was glad not to be alone...

His poems are for reading out loud. they are quite beautifully written. ?:o)
