Simple Joys

2008.02.27
looking out our bedroom window—watching the seasons change—and knowing that the person I love sees the same scene

walking on the beach—hearing the waves repeat their rhythms—feeling blessed

writing a letter—writing in my notebook—

collecting seashells—some are presents—

discovering neighborhoods

planning a trip back to New Mexico and Utah's canyon country—sharing our favorite hikes

being invited to read my poetry at an art happening

going to an eclectic range of art exhibits

painting—meditating

enjoying conversations and laughter

Oh, frabjous day! Callooh. Callay!
He chortled in his joy.
Through the Looking Glass Lewis Carroll

On the surface a fairly straightforward theme—Simple Joys. Having just attended a class on midrash—the filling in of the story left by the gaps between words or sentences, I cannot read simple joys without recognizing the space between the words. Simple is quite complex. It begs for a personal definition. Does it mean that it’s no fringe and low maintenance? Are we talking economics? To be thrust into a simple existence is, to me, quite different than selecting simple as an option. And what do we mean by joys? That word, too often overused by the purveyors of some “happiness” ideologies, loses its potency when it is reduced to a clever saying. Is joy a social activity or can it be experienced in isolation? Is it a practice? Do we pass it along like an heirloom?

Simple, for me, doesn’t have strings and needs attached like barnacles. It’s unadorned— layers of embellishments weigh down the simple. Simple sometimes grows and grows until the original is inundated by needs. As for joy—, for me, it expands when it includes someone else, or the other is a recipient. So the space between simple and joys is either a gulf or a slit. The crevasse is when what is needed outgrows the simple and becomes complex before joy is attained. If I put these two words together —close together—I discover the splicing has a quality of immediacy and spontaneity.

Simple Joys

Carley Wow.....I didn't post on simple joys because I got into the same sort of inner dialogue that you described.... And if I had, my list would have been almost identical to yours (up to a point.) The point where it diverges is that I've never been invited to read my poetry anywhere. I enjoyed your set. And it's nice to meet a kindred spirit!

Lindyart I love all you wrote .. the whole set is elegant ...

simple joys to me are things you don't really have to have money to enjoy or very little like bubble bath or none like reading but also in the context of simpler times and life .. relaxed little things that just bring pleasure but then again the whole things is how each of us sees it and I love !!!!!!!!! how you have expressed it here .. thanks for this :)!!!

oldbabe These are simply wonderful. Thanks for sharing. And I'm impressed you are invited to read your poetry. I'm not surprised that you paint too.

And shells, I collect them! I love combing the beach for them. Used to live in FL long ago. Now living in the midwest but I visit my father every year in FL and still comb the beaches.

Definition? I didn't ponder too long on it. Things just popped into my mind. I could not define how they got there when the theme was mentioned. I guess it boiled down to an appreciation of things that had no price tag.

Peche Beautiful series, love the Carroll quote - made me chortle too :P hehe
You are nothing short of right, in my opinion, when you say that layers of embellishment weigh down the simple. You're a beautiful writer - I don't know how else to express my thoughts at what you have written. It astounded me because it's so apt, and so insightful. Thank you for making me think, and most of all, for smiling at your talent.

focussed Simply joys and complex thoughts.
I feel that joy is a state we reach by engaging in the passions that are true to our own callings and desires. It seems to me as though you understand all of your callings extremely well!
**note to self - stop reading all of these thought provoking posts so late at night. your brain simply cannot cope**
