Pileated Woodpecker

2008.03.01

This is a year round woodpecker—as large as a crow. I believe it is considered the largest woodpecker in North America—about sixteen to nineteen inches. It's wing span can be as much as thirty inches. I didn't have my telephoto handy so I couldn't really get a close up.

Actually 'bird-lovers' no longer can refer to this as the largest woodpecker because: "A group of wildlife scientists believe the ivory-billed woodpecker is not extinct. They say they have made seven firm sightings of the bird in central Arkansas. The landmark find caps a search that began more than 60 years ago, after biologists said North America’s largest woodpecker had become extinct in the United States." The Ivory-Billed Woodpecker is about twenty-three inches.

ncshutterbug Wonderful shot! I've seen them in the trees behind my house, but they're always so high up, I can't get very close, even with a 300mm zoom. I love this!

oldbabe Very interesting. I didn't know they were so large or called Woodcocks either. I have heard the term Woodcock but didn't relate the two. I don't believe I've ever seen one either but I'm going to have to track the woodpeckers down in our wooded area when I here them drilling to see just what they are now!

Carley Beautiful shot! I had no idea they could be so big....I'll bet a woodpecker the size of a crow could do some mighty pecking!
Carley · 2008-03-01: 17:58

storytaylor your fine work is proof that there is art in what many consider mundane. wonderful pre-visualization and execution. I often think the nature photographers introduce others to the beauty not immediately evident to them. not only is your work about art, it is a spiritual gift, equal to your eye, because the eye follows the intimations of the heart

chipotle we have these in out back yard. the raise such a ruckus when they peck. their call sounds sort of prehistoric, too.
