A Story of a Barber Pole

2008.03.11
“Some of the worst mistakes of my life have been haircuts.”
— Jim Morrison

“Never ask a barber if you need a haircut.”

— Cowboy Proverb

First we had no barber shop in town and then a small one opened with three barber chairs. Then another smaller shop opened—one chair. The owner of the larger shop started to stand in front of his shop encouraging people to stop.

A woman owns the small shop and she is a townie who was born , went to school, married and still lives in town. She makes brownies for customers.

The larger shop owner bought a barber pole and placed it outside his store.

I wonder if the owner knows : The Origin of the Barber Pole

"The modern barber pole originated in the days when bloodletting was one of the principal duties of the barber. The two spiral ribbons painted around the pole represent the two long bandages, one twisted around the arm before bleeding, and the other used to bind it afterward. Originally, when not in use, the pole with a bandage wound around it, so that both might be together when needed, was hung at the door as a sign. But later, for convenience, instead of hanging out the original pole, another one was painted in imitation of it and given a permanent place on the outside of the shop. This was the beginning of the modern barber pole."

jendayee thanks for the explanations !

Carley That's really interesting about the origins of the barber pole! I like the color one best also, although both are really cool. Your quotation about asking the barber if you need a haircut reminds me of the one that says that if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

vollenda I never knew that! Great story, both of them. My favorite is the b&w.

jagungal Yeah, I actually knew that about barbers' poles — but good to hear it again and to have it woven into your hometown narrative. Both images are good — but I think the B&W is more arresting.
