Seeing—In and Out

2008.03.25
A forest bird never wants a cage.
—Henrik Ibsen

“People find ideas a bore because they do not distinguish between live ones and stuffed ones on a shelf.”

—Ezra Pound

“Is it worth while to observe that there are no Venetian blinds in Venice?”

—William Dean Howells

“A poem is never finished, only abandoned.”

—Paul Valery

“Heroes know that things must happen when it is time for them to happen. A quest may not simply be abandoned; unicorns may go unrescued for a long time, but not forever; a happy ending cannot come in the middle of the story.”

— Peter S. Beagle

“If you have abandoned one faith, do not abandon all faith. There is always an alternative to the faith we lose. Or is it the same faith under another mask?”

— Graham Greene

What happens to the hole when the cheese is gone?
—Bertolt Brecht

“Unasked advice is a trespass on sacred privacy”

"One can never know for sure what a deserted area looks like”

—George Carlin

“To live in this world, you must be able to do three things: to love what is mortal; to hold it against your bones knowing your own life depends on it; and, when the time comes to let it go, to let it go”

—Mary Oliver

“It is with narrow-souled people as with narrow-necked bottles; the less they have in them, the more noise they make in pouring out”

—Alexander Pope

Four things come not back: the spoken word, the sped arrow, the past life and the neglected opportunity.”

—Proverb

A morning-glory at my window satisfies me more than the metaphysics of books.

—Walt Whitman

May you have warmth in your igloo, oil in your lamp, and peace in your heart”

—Eskimo Proverb

Last week I went to the Griffin Museum of Photography to see Stephen Wilkes "Ellis Island: Ghosts Of Freedom" exhibit.

Moving, monumental, superlative—just keep adding to that list.

I wanted to go out and find old institutions and take photos. Constraints being what they are that wasn't possible. But I did go looking for windows—mostly old, some in structures now abandoned, some in run down places, some lived in, some tired, and a few comfortable and inviting,

“Poetry often enters through the window of irrelevance.”

— M. C. Richards

Peche And what a fantastic outcome. So emotive, so historical and scarred - each of these shots has an unspoken story and is given so much depth by your choice of words. #5 is a favourite - great composition and perspective.
And Graham Greene... :)
